Age is a physical number and not a mental number

Satyamev Jayate today showed us how important it is to respect age in all its glamour.. Aamir Khan viewed his opinion rightly so when saying that children are much celebrated but the same celebration is not given to senior citizens. Satyamev Jayate today created the importance and need for space for Seniors. They have feelings and their minds are alert and life does change for them everyday like in the lives of children. The world should realize that it is important to focus on Seniors as much as children. They have needs which need to be catered to as well.

National Council for Senior Citizens to be constituted:PM

Prime Minister has approved the constitution of a National Council for Senior Citizens. The Council would advise the Central and State Governments on issues related to welfare of senior citizens and enhancement of their quality of life with special reference to (a) policies, programmes and legislative measures; (b) promotion of physical and financial security, health and independent and productive living, and (c) awareness generation and community mobilization.

The Council would be chaired by the Minister of Social Justice & Empowerment. Other members of the Council include the Minister of State, Social Justice & Empowerment, the oldest Members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, representatives of 5 State Governments (one each from the North, South, East, West & North Eastern Regions) and 1 Union Territory by rotation, 5 representatives each from Senior Citizens’ Associations, Pensioners’ Association, NGOs working for Senior Citizens and Experts, and five senior citizens who have distinguished themselves in various fields.

The Council would be anchored in the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment.

Tax Changes for Senior Citizens

A new tax slab has been introduced for senior citizens of 80 years and above. There will not be any tax upto 5 lacs income for people above 80 years. Additionally, the current age limit for consideration as senior citizens has been reduced from 65 years to 60. And they will get tax exemption for income up to Rs 2.5 lakh (earlier it was 2.4 lakhs) (Financial year 2011-12 (Assessment Year 2012-13))

This award has been created in memory of Anjani Mashelkar, Dr R. A. Mashelkar´s mother who had brought him up by facing all the odds that a poor widowed uneducated mother, moving to Mumbai with her only child, a six year old boy would face.
